Diarrhea

Possible Symptoms:

  • loose, frequent, watery bowel movements
  • crampy pain
  • gas
  • pain around the anus
  • nausea and vomiting/throwing up
  • bloating
  • headache
  • fever

A short episode of non-bloody, loose or watery bowel movements is common for all age groups. The most common cause is a viral infection. Bacterial toxins (food poisoning) can also cause diarrhea. Both will usually resolve/gets better on their own. The infection may be passed between family members, so wash your hands carefully and prevent the spread of the condition. Occasionally a change in diet or a new medication may cause some loose stool. If this does not improve by itself within a few days you should see your nurse/doctor. Since the diarrhea will usually resolve/gets better by itself, your self-care involves avoiding dehydration and watching for signs of more serious problems as outlined in the flowchart.
