Heartburn - Advice (Antacids)

Antacids are non-prescription (over the counter) products, which neutralize acid. They are available in liquid and tablet form. They may contain magnesium hydroxide (which may cause diarrhea), aluminum hydroxide (which may cause constipation) or calcium carbonate (Tums, Rolaids and others). Antacids may contain a mixture of magnesium and aluminum (Maalox or Riopan for example) to reduce any side effects. You can take antacids when you want rapid relief of heartburn. There will not be any long lasting effect. If taken regularly after meals or at bedtime they may help prevent or reduce your heartburn discomfort. If you need to take antacids more than twice a day then you should see your nurse/doctor.

Try an antacid and then continue with the questions below.
