If you know someone who has a problem with an addictive substance you can make the most impact by confronting him or her with the problem and suggesting that they seek help. Trying to help them cover up the problem may only contribute to the addictive behaviour. Addictive behaviour can lead to physical and verbal abuse problems that put you in danger. If you live with someone who has a problem with substance abuse you may also need help. Talk to your nurse/doctor or counsellor. Often friends and family are helpful for support, but may not know how to deal with the situation any better than you.
Abuse or addiction may occur with over the counter nonprescription medications, prescription drugs, or illegal drugs. It may occur with many other substances such as glue, paint, or gasoline, which may all be sniffed. Addictive behaviour may also involve activities such as gambling. As a general rule if a behaviour is repetitive and interferes with ones ability to carry on the normal activities of daily living it is a potential addiction. See your nurse/doctor to discuss this problem further. Our self-help suggestions for alcohol may be modified for other substances or behaviours.
