Sunburn- Home Suggestions
1. Cool the burned skin with a cold bath, damp towel or cold shower.
2. Drink plenty of non-alcoholic fluids.
3. Apply a moisturizing cream to the burned area liberally, several times daily.
4. Use acetaminophen (Tylenol and others), ASA (Aspirin and others) or ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin and others) for pain and fever control. Do not give ASA to those under 20 years of age. See page 99 for details.
5. Painful skin may be treated with local anaesthetic spray or ointments such as benzocaine (Solarcaine).
6. Stinging or itching can be treated with 0.5% hydrocortisone available without a prescription.
7. Antihistamines may reduce itching. See page 95 for details.
8. Dont expose burned skin to the sun even with sunscreen applied. Wear a hat, long sleeves and long pants.
9. Always wear a hat and apply a sunblock 30 or higher to prevent sunburn. Apply sunblock liberally to children.
